Twilight Forest Naga Boss Guide

The Twilight Forest Naga is your first boss. Learn how to find the Naga Courtyard, block and punish its charges, avoid the red charge, and turn its scales into armor.

Last checked: October 31, 2026 · Works for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2 builds

Quick Answer

The Twilight Forest Naga is the first boss of the mod. It lives in the Naga Courtyard, a walled hedge garden in the green forest biomes. Block its charges with a shield, hit the head while it is dazed, and back off when it turns red. It drops Naga Scales for the Naga Scale Tunic and Leggings, and the kill unlocks the path to the Lich.

The Naga is a giant serpent with 120 health on Easy. On Normal and Hard the mod adds bonus health on spawn (200 and 250 in the current 1.21.1 source), so expect a longer fight than the boss bar first suggests. It is the boss most players meet first, often within a short walk of their portal. If you have not built one yet, start with the Twilight Forest portal guide.

How to spot the Naga Courtyard

The Twilight Forest Naga lives in a courtyard that is easy to see once you know the shape. Look for a large square of tall stone walls with hedges inside, sitting in the normal Twilight Forest biomes rather than the swamp, snow or dark regions. From a tree top it reads as a neat grid of green walls in the middle of the trees.

Outer walls

Stone brick walls with corner towers mark the edge. The Naga will not leave this area, and it ignores damage that comes from outside it.

Hedge terraces

Rows of hedge blocks and paths fill the inside. Hedges hurt if you push into them, so do not plan to hide in them.

Boss spawner

The Naga appears from a spawner in the open center once you walk in. You cannot break the structure’s blocks until it is dead.

Reading the Naga's moves

Most deaths against the Twilight Forest Naga come from misreading one attack. The table lists what the serpent does, how it looks, and what to do.

Move How to tell Your answer
Normal charge It lines up and rushes straight at you, breaking blocks in its way Raise a shield. A blocked charge bounces it back and leaves it dazed
Dazed It stops and crit sparks spin above its head Hit the head as fast as you can. After about 15 damage it snaps out of it
Stunless charge The body turns red and angry particles appear Do not block. Sidestep or sprint away. It bites through the shield and puts it on a 10 second cooldown
Circling It loops around you at a distance Keep turning to face it and stay away from walls

Its body is a target too. Hits on the body segments still count, but they only deal two thirds of the damage. Aim for the head whenever you have the choice.

The serpent also changes as it loses health. Its body drops segments and it gets faster with each one lost, so the last quarter of the fight is the quickest. Explosions do not hurt it, and if you stop dealing damage for about 30 seconds it starts healing one point per second. Walking away to rest costs you progress.

A safe way to beat the Naga boss

Iron armor, a shield and a good sword are enough to beat the Twilight Forest Naga. A Charm of Life or some food that heals helps if you are new to the fight.

  1. Walk to the middle of the courtyard so you have room on every side. Fighting near a wall lets it pin you.
  2. Hold the shield up as it lines up for a charge. Let the charge hit the shield.
  3. When the sparks appear over its head, drop the shield and swing at the head until it recovers.
  4. Watch for the red tint. When you see it, lower the shield and move sideways out of its path.
  5. Repeat the block and strike loop. Eat between charges, never during one.

Mistakes that end the fight early

  • Shooting from the walls. The Naga ignores damage from anyone standing outside its home area.
  • Using TNT. It is immune to explosions.
  • Blocking the red charge. You lose the shield for 10 seconds right when you need it.
  • Pillaring up. It breaks blocks while charging, so a quick dirt tower will not hold.

Naga scale armor and other drops

The Twilight Forest Naga drops 6 to 11 Naga Scales and a Naga Trophy. With default settings the loot appears in a chest where it dies. Looting adds a little, and extra players in the fight add more scales.

Piece Scales Armor points Comes with
Naga Scale Tunic 8 7 (iron is 6) Fire Protection III
Naga Scale Leggings 7 6 (iron is 5) Protection III

Plan the scales. Both pieces need 15 scales, so one solo kill often covers only one. Make the tunic first. Its Fire Protection III pays off later against the Hydra’s fire. The scales also repair the armor on an anvil.

What the kill opens up

Killing the Twilight Forest Naga completes its advancement and points you to the next target, the Lich Tower. The Naga Trophy is also one of the trophies you can later place in a Knight Stronghold pedestal. For the full sequence of fights, see the Twilight Forest boss order. When you are ready, head to the Twilight Lich guide to plan the next fight. Common Questions

Why does the Naga take no damage from my arrows?

The Naga ignores damage from anything outside its home area around the courtyard. Step inside the walls and shoot from there, or fight it in melee.

When the Naga glows red it does a stunless charge. Blocking it damages the shield and puts it on a 10 second cooldown. Dodge that charge instead of blocking.

Yes. If it takes no damage for about 30 seconds, it heals one point of health per second until you hit it again.

The tunic needs 8 scales and the leggings need 7, so 15 in total. One Naga drops 6 to 11, so you usually get only one piece from a solo kill.

No. Twilight Forest boss structures are protected until their boss is defeated, so you cannot mine into them early.
