Supported Minecraft Versions and Loaders
Up to Minecraft 1.20.1, the mod ran on Forge. From 1.20.2 onward the team moved to NeoForge, so newer versions have no Forge file. In 2026 an official Fabric build arrived for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2, and the same file also runs on Quilt.
The mod needs to match your game version exactly. A 1.21.1 jar will not load in 1.21.4, and a NeoForge jar will not load in Fabric. It is a Java Edition mod only.
Is Twilight Forest Safe to Download?
Yes, when it comes from the official CurseForge page. TeamTwilight's own GitHub says releases go to CurseForge, and the source code is public there. Re-upload sites with several "mirror" buttons often bundle ads or old files.
A genuine file is named like twilightforest-1.21.1-4.8.3345-universal.jar and is about 25 MB. If your download is a tiny .exe or a .zip with an installer inside, delete it.
What Is the Twilight
Forest Mod?
Twilight Forest adds a new dimension to Minecraft that is locked in permanent dusk. Tall canopy trees block most of the sky, the ground sits much lower than in the Overworld, and there is no day or night cycle. The open forest is calm, because hostile mobs do not spawn on its surface. The danger waits inside the structures: courtyards, towers, mazes and fortresses, each guarded by a boss.
The mod plays like a full adventure map. You start in the central forest, defeat the first bosses, and each win removes a barrier on a new region. That chain of unlocks, called progression, is what makes Twilight Forest feel different from mods that only add new mobs or blocks.

Who Made the Twilight Forest Mod?
Benimatic released the mod in 2011. AtomicBlom, Drullkus, Tamaized and williewillus later ported it to 1.12.2, and today TeamTwilight, including Killer_Demon, Drullkus and Tamaized, keeps it updated for new Minecraft versions. Bugs are reported on the team’s GitHub issue tracker.
How to Install Twilight Forest
You need Minecraft Java Edition, the loader that matches your file, and a few minutes. Back up any world you care about first, and remove OptiFine from your mods folder, because the mod does not run with it.
Install Twilight Forest with NeoForge
- Download the NeoForge installer for your Minecraft version from neoforged.net and run it. Choose Install client.
- Start Minecraft once with the new NeoForge profile, then close it. This creates the mods folder.
- Put the Twilight Forest jar into .minecraft/mods. On Windows, type %appdata%\.minecraft in the Run box to find it.
- Launch the NeoForge profile again and check the Mods menu.
Install Twilight Forest with Fabric
- Install Fabric Loader for 1.21.1 or 26.1.2 from fabricmc.net.
- Open the Fabric file on CurseForge and check its Relations tab for required mods, such as Fabric API.
- Place Twilight Forest and every required mod in the mods folder.
- Start the Fabric profile. Quilt users can use the same file.

How to Make a Twilight Forest Portal
Quick Answer
Dig a 2×2 hole in grass or dirt and fill it with water. Place a flower, mushroom or other plant on every block around the edge. Throw a diamond into the water. Lightning strikes and the pool turns into a portal.
Expect the lightning. It can set nearby grass and trees on fire, so clear the area and stand a few blocks back before you drop the diamond.

Twilight Forest Portal Requirements
Walk or jump into the purple portal surface. You arrive beside a return portal, which works both ways without another diamond. Put a few torches and a chest next to it before you explore, so you can always find your way home.

Twilight Forest Progression
and Boss Order
Most regions are protected until you beat the boss that guards the step before them. Walk in early and the dimension pushes back: the Swamp drains your hunger, the Dark Forest blinds you, and protected structures stop you from breaking blocks. The order below is the path the mod expects.
Opening path
Naga → Twilight Lich
Beating the Lich opens all three branches below. Do them in any order.
Swamp branch
Minoshroom → Hydra
Eat the Meef Stroganoff the Minoshroom drops to enter the Fire Swamp.
Dark Forest branch
Knight Phantoms → Ur-Ghast
Clear the Knight Stronghold to open the Dark Tower.
Snow branch
Alpha Yeti → Snow Queen
Beating the Alpha Yeti lifts the frost barrier on the Glacier.
Finish all three branches and the Highlands open fully. A Lamp of Cinders from the Troll Caves then burns a way into the Thornlands and up to the Final Plateau.

Twilight Forest Final Castle
The Final Castle sits on the Final Plateau, the last region of the dimension. Many players search for a “Castle Keeper” boss there, but the official mod has no finished final boss yet. You can explore the castle, and its door is as far as the official story goes in current versions.
If you want a proper ending, add-ons such as Twilight Forest: Finale add an endgame boss for Forge 1.20.1. They are fan projects, not part of the official mod. Read what is inside the Final Castle.
Twilight Forest Biomes
The dimension has around 20 biomes. About half are open from your first step. The rest stay locked until you beat the right boss, which is why the map feels like it grows as you play.
Open from the start
Twilight Forest, Dense Twilight Forest, Twilight Clearing, Firefly Forest, Oak Savanna, Mushroom Forest, Deep Mushroom Forest, Enchanted Forest, Spooky Forest, plus lakes and streams.
Good for gathering wood, food and early loot from hollow hills and druid huts.
Locked by progression
Swamp, Fire Swamp, Dark Forest, Dark Forest Center, Snowy Forest, Glacier, Highlands, Thornlands and the Final Plateau.
Each one shows a magic barrier or a harmful effect until its gate boss is down.
Twilight Forest Items and Charms
Loot is the reason to push deeper. These are the items players look up most, with what they actually do.
Charm of Keeping
Saves part of your inventory when you die. Tier I keeps your armor and held gear, Tier II also keeps your hotbar, and Tier III keeps everything. It is used up on death. Four of one tier craft the next.
Charm of Life
Steps in when a hit would kill you and restores your health instead. Tier II heals more than Tier I. Like the Charm of Keeping, it is consumed when it triggers.
Magic and Maze Maps
Magic Maps show biomes and landmarks across the dimension, while Maze Maps reveal Labyrinth corridors. An Ore Map version also marks ores, which helps a lot in the Labyrinth.

Twilight Forest Fabric vs Official Version
Search for the mod and you will find several projects with almost the same name. Only one is made by TeamTwilight. The others are community forks or ports with their own goals.

Does Twilight Forest work on multiplayer servers?
Yes. Install the same mod version on the server and on every player’s game. A mismatch, even by one build number, stops players from joining.
Why does Twilight Forest crash with OptiFine?
OptiFine changes parts of Minecraft’s code that the mod depends on, and the developers say they cannot fix it from their side. Use Embeddium and Oculus on NeoForge, or Sodium and Iris on Fabric, for performance and shaders.
Why is my Twilight Forest portal not working?
The usual causes are a missing plant on one edge block, flowing water instead of still water, a frame of stone or sand, or building it outside the Overworld. Fix the pool, then throw in a fresh diamond.
How do you leave the Twilight Forest?
Step back into the portal you arrived through. If you lose it, build a new pool inside the dimension the same way, with water, plants and a diamond, and it will take you to the Overworld.

No. One diamond lights one portal, and that portal stays active. The return portal in the Twilight Forest also works both ways, so you only spend another diamond if you build a second portal somewhere else.
Can you make a Twilight Forest portal in the Nether or the End?
Not by default. Portals only form in the Overworld, but server owners can change this in the mod’s config file. If your portal will not light in another dimension, that setting is the reason.
