Twilight Forest Portal:
How to Make One and Fix It
Build a Twilight Forest portal from a small water pool, a ring of plants and one Diamond. This guide covers the exact steps, why the lightning sometimes never comes, and how to get back home.
Last checked: October 31, 2026 · Works for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2 builds
Quick Answer
To make a Twilight Forest portal, dig a 2×2 hole one block deep in grass or dirt, fill all four spaces with water source blocks, and put a plant (a flower, mushroom, sapling or tall grass) on every block touching the pool. Then throw a Diamond into the water. Lightning strikes and the pool turns into a purple portal. Step in to go to the Twilight Forest.
This page covers the whole Twilight Forest portal process for the current mod builds (4.8 on Minecraft 1.21.1 and the 4.9 alpha builds on 26.1.2): what to bring, how to build it, what to do when the lightning never comes, how to get back home, and the settings that control portals on servers. If you still need the mod itself, start on the Twilight Forest mod homepage.
What you need before you build
The build is cheap. The only rare item is the Diamond, and it is used up when the portal lights.
1 Diamond
The activation item. You throw it in. Any normal Diamond works.
Water buckets
Two buckets are enough for a 2×2 pool if you make an infinite water source first. Bring four to keep it simple.
8 or more plants
One for each block that touches the pool. A 2×2 pool needs at least 8. Bring a few spares.
A shovel
For digging the pool and fixing the ground around it. Grass, dirt, podzol and mycelium all work as the frame.
Bring a combat kit too. You arrive in a new dimension far from your base. Pack armor, a sword, food, torches and a stack of building blocks before you step through.
How to make a Twilight
Forest portal step by step
Build in the Overworld. By default the portal does not form in the Nether or the End.
- Pick flat, natural ground. Choose a grassy spot away from your base and away from trees. Lightning can start fires, so open ground is safer.
- Dig a 2×2 hole one block deep. Every water block must sit on a solid block and be surrounded on its sides by grass, dirt, podzol or mycelium. Keep it one block deep.
- Fill every space with source water. All four spaces need still source blocks. Flowing water or a half-filled corner stops the portal from forming.
- Place a plant on every edge block. Each grass or dirt block that touches the water needs a plant on top. That is the 8 blocks around a 2×2 pool. Corners are not required, but planting them does no harm.
- Throw the Diamond in. Hold the Diamond and press the drop key (Q by default) while looking at the water. Do not try to place it. The item has to land in the pool.
- Step back and wait for the lightning. A bolt strikes the pool and the water turns into a purple portal surface. Put out any fires it starts.
- Walk in. Stand in the portal for a moment and you are moved to the Twilight Forest. A matching return portal forms where you land.
Valid ground blocks and plants
Most failed portals come down to one wrong block. Use this table to check your build.
| Part | Works | Does not work |
|---|---|---|
| Ground around the water | Grass block, dirt, podzol, mycelium | Stone, sand, gravel, wood planks, glass, any placed building block |
| Plants on the edge | Flowers, tall grass, ferns, saplings, mushrooms, and other natural plants such as sugar cane or crops | Torches, carpets, slabs, signs, item frames, or nothing at all |
| Water | Still water source blocks in every space | Flowing water, waterlogged blocks, ice |
| Activation item | Diamond, thrown into the water | Diamond block, emerald, or right-clicking the water |
Mushrooms on dirt. Mushrooms can pop off in bright light. If one breaks before you throw the Diamond, that edge counts as empty. Flowers and saplings are the most reliable choice.
Bigger and odd-shaped twilight portals
The 2×2 square is the smallest size. The mod checks the whole connected body of water, so larger and irregular pools also work. A 3×3 square, a long 2×5 strip or an L shape will all light, as long as the same rules hold for every water block.
Every edge needs a plant
The more water you add, the longer the edge. Walk the full outline and check each block that touches water from the side.
No hidden gaps
A water block that touches air, a cave, or another pool breaks the shape. Odd shapes fail more often because of one missed corner.
There is a size cap
Recent versions have a max portal size setting that limits how many water blocks are checked. A huge decorative lake can fail for that reason alone.
Twilight Forest portal not
working? Check these causes
If you threw the Diamond and nothing happened, go down this list in order. The first four cover almost every case.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond floats or sinks, no lightning | One edge block has no plant, or a plant broke | Walk around the pool and check all sides. Replace missing plants, then pick up and throw the Diamond again |
| Nothing happens on a stone or sand base | Wrong ground block next to the water | Replace it with grass or dirt and add a plant on top |
| Nothing happens in a fresh pool | Flowing water in one space | Refill each space with a bucket so all four are source blocks |
| Diamond was placed or used, not dropped | The item never entered the water | Hold it and press the drop key while aiming at the pool |
| Works in single player, not on the server | Spawn protection, a land-claim mod, or portal settings | See the server section below |
| Nothing happens in the Nether or End | Portals only form in the origin dimension (the Overworld) by default | Build it in the Overworld, or ask the pack author to enable portals in other dimensions |
| Big pool never lights | Pool is over the max portal size | Test with a 2x2 first, then grow it in small steps |
| Correct build, still no portal on a server or pack | The placement safety check is on and found no safe landing spot | Move the pool some distance away and try again |
| Nothing in a modpack | The pack locks the portal behind an advancement or quest | Check the pack's quest book. Some packs require a goal first |
Make sure the mod loaded. If Twilight Forest items do not appear in the creative menu or JEI, the portal cannot work at all. That is an install problem, not a build problem. The homepage has the matching versions.
How to leave the Twilight
Forest and return home
When you arrive, a return portal forms next to you. Step back into it and you go back to the Overworld near the portal you built. It works without another Diamond in default settings.
Mark the return portal
Write down the coordinates (F3 on Java) the moment you arrive. The forest canopy all looks the same, and it is easy to lose the portal after one fight.
Lost it? Build another
A portal pool built inside the Twilight Forest leads back to the Overworld. Carry a spare Diamond, water buckets and a few flowers on long trips.
Dying sends you home
If you die, you respawn at your Overworld bed or world spawn, not in the forest. Your items stay where you died, so a Charm of Keeping is worth carrying.
Servers may differ
If the server sets the return portal to need the activation item, you will need a Diamond to use it. Ask an admin if the return portal does nothing.
Read more about keeping your gear in the Charm of Keeping guide, and use a Magic Map to find your way around the forest once you are there.
Portals on servers and modpacks
On a multiplayer server, the build rules are the same, but two extra things can block you.
Protected spawn and claims. Vanilla spawn protection stops non-operators from changing blocks near world spawn. Claim mods such as FTB Chunks can also block lightning or block changes inside claims. Walk well outside spawn and outside any claimed land, then build.
Server settings. Admins can change portal rules in the Twilight Forest config file in the server’s config folder. Names differ a little between versions, but these are the main options:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Disable portal creation | Turns portal building off completely. Players then need an admin, a command or a quest to get in. |
| Portal permission / admin-only portals | Only players with the set permission level (operators) can make portals. |
| Portal unlocked by advancement | The portal only forms after the player has a chosen advancement. Common in modpacks. |
| Origin dimension | The dimension that links to the Twilight Forest. Overworld by default. |
| Portals in other dimensions | Allows portals outside the origin dimension. Off by default. |
| Return portal usable | When off, the return portal needs the activation item as well. |
| Destructive lightning | Controls whether the portal lightning can set things on fire. |
| Max portal size | Limits how many water blocks the mod checks when a portal forms. |
| Check portal placement | Pre-checks the landing area for safety. A failed check can stop the portal forming. |
Fire on a shared server. If players keep building portals near wooden bases, turning off destructive lightning saves a lot of grief.
What to do after you
enter the Twilight Forest
Most of the dimension is locked at first. Some biomes hurt you and some structures cannot be broken until you beat the right boss. The safe first targets are the Naga Courtyard and the Lich Tower in the green forest near where you land. The Twilight Forest progression guide explains which areas open in what order, and the boss order and boss list covers each fight. Your first boss is usually the Naga.
Common Questions
Do I need a Diamond every time I use the portal?
No. The Diamond is used up once, when the portal lights. After that you can walk through the portal and its return portal as often as you like. Some servers change the return portal so it needs the activation item.
Can I build a Twilight Forest portal without a Diamond?
Not in normal survival play. The Diamond is the activation item. Modpacks can change this, and server admins can use commands to send players to the dimension.
How many plants do I need for a 2x2 portal?
At least 8, one on each grass or dirt block that touches the water from the side. Many players also plant the 4 corners and use 12, which is a safe habit when you are not sure which blocks count.
Why did lightning burn down my house?
The portal lightning acts like normal lightning and can set nearby grass, leaves and wood on fire. Build away from wooden structures, or ask a server admin to turn off destructive portal lightning in the config.
Does the portal work in any Overworld biome?
Yes, as long as you can make the ground from grass, dirt, podzol or mycelium and place plants on it. In a desert or snowy biome, bring your own dirt and flowers.
Is there a way into the Twilight Forest without building a portal?
In normal play, no. Server owners and pack makers have options, though: a config setting can make new players spawn in the Twilight Forest with a return portal, and admins can teleport players there with commands.
