Twilight Forest Progression
and Boss Order
Twilight Forest progression opens one region at a time. This guide gives the full boss order, compares all eight bosses, and shows what each stage unlocks up to the Final Plateau.
Last checked: October 31, 2026 · Works for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2 builds
Quick Answer
Twilight Forest progression runs in five stages. Beat the Naga, then the Lich. That opens three branches you can do in any order: Swamp to Fire Swamp (Minoshroom, Hydra), Dark Forest (Knight Phantoms, Ur-Ghast) and Snowy Forest to Glacier (Alpha Yeti, Snow Queen). Finish all three to open the Highlands, take the Lamp of Cinders from a Troll Vault, and burn through the thorns to the Final Plateau.
Each region stays locked until you beat the boss that guards the region before it. Walk in early and the biome fights back with hunger, darkness, cold, fire or acid rain, and its structures cannot be mined. This guide maps the whole route by stage, with a gear checklist for each, so you always know where to go next. You need a working portal first: see the Twilight Forest portal guide for the build.
The full progression order at a glance
Use this table as your checklist. The bosses are named here only as gates. For fights and drops, see the Twilight Forest boss order guide.
| Stage | Region | Goal | What it opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Twilight Forest (open) | Naga Courtyard | Lich Tower |
| 2 | Twilight Forest | Lich Tower | Swamp, Dark Forest, Snowy Forest |
| 3A | Swamp, then Fire Swamp | Labyrinth, then Hydra Lair | Fire Swamp (after eating Meef Stroganoff), then part of the Highlands |
| 3B | Dark Forest | Knight Stronghold, then Dark Tower | Dark Tower, then part of the Highlands |
| 3C | Snowy Forest, then Glacier | Yeti Cave, then Aurora Palace | Glacier, then part of the Highlands |
| 4 | Highlands | Troll Caves and Troll Vaults | Lamp of Cinders |
| 5 | Thornlands, Final Plateau | Final Castle | No finished final boss yet |
Twilight Forest Boss Order:
All 8 Bosses Compared
Health values are the base values for one player. The difficulty column is our own rating from playing the mod, not an official number. Gear is a sensible minimum, not the only way to win.
| # | Boss | Location | Health | Difficulty | Recommended gear | Key drop | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Naga | Naga Courtyard, Twilight Forest | 120 | Easy | Iron armor, iron or diamond sword, food | Naga Scales | Lich Tower |
| 2 | Lich | Lich Tower | 100 | Medium | Naga Scale armor, sharp melee weapon, bow | One of four scepters | Swamp, Snowy Forest, Dark Forest |
| 3 | Minoshroom | Labyrinth, Swamp | 120 | Medium | Diamond or Naga armor, shield, Charm of Keeping | Diamond Minotaur Axe, Meef Stroganoff | Fire Swamp |
| 4 | Hydra | Hydra Lair, Fire Swamp | 360 | Hard | Best armor you have, Fire Resistance potions, strong bow | Fiery Blood | Part of the Highlands |
| 5 | Knight Phantoms | Knight Stronghold, Dark Forest | 35 x6 | Medium | Knightmetal or diamond armor, shield, healing | Phantom Helmet and Chestplate | Dark Tower |
| 6 | Ur-Ghast | Dark Tower, Dark Forest Center | 250 | Hard | Bow with plenty of arrows, Fire Resistance, building blocks | Fiery Tears, Carminite | Part of the Highlands |
| 7 | Alpha Yeti | Yeti Cave, Snowy Forest | 200 | Medium | Full armor, shield, room to dodge | Alpha Yeti Fur | Glacier |
| 8 | Snow Queen | Aurora Palace, Glacier | 200 | Hard | Alpha Yeti Fur armor, bow, food for a long climb | Tri-Bow or Seeker Bow (chest) | Part of the Highlands |
Drops come in a chest. By default most bosses leave their loot in a chest where they die instead of dropping items on the floor. The server config option bossDropChests controls this. If you see no loot after a kill, check the spot where the boss died for a chest before you assume the loot is gone.
Fiery Blood and Fiery Tears both become Fiery Ingots with an iron ingot. The Fiery Blood and fiery gear page covers the recipes.
Stage 1 and 2: the open forest
Only the green Twilight Forest biomes and the lakes and clearings around them are fully open when you arrive. That is plenty to work with. Spend your first trips gearing up here before you touch any boss.
What to do first
- Raid Hollow Hills. These mounds hold ore and chests. They are the fastest way to turn iron gear into diamond gear early.
- Clear a Hedge Maze. Small thorny mazes with spawners and chests. Good loot for little risk.
- Collect forest wood and materials. Ironwood and Steeleaf gear are the mod’s early tiers and are well worth crafting.
- Find the Naga Courtyard. A large walled courtyard in the forest. Beat the Naga for Naga Scales and craft the Naga Scale Tunic (8 scales) and Leggings (7 scales).
- Find the Lich Tower. A tall stone tower. It is protected until the Naga is dead. Beating the Lich gives one of four scepters and opens the rest of the map.
Gear Check
Before the Naga
Full iron armor or better, a sword, a bow with plenty of arrows, food and blocks to pillar up.
Gear Check
Before the Lich
Naga Scale armor pieces, a strong bow or melee weapon, and healing. The tower climb takes time, so pack extra food.
Gear Check
Leaving stage 2
Your scepter, diamond or Ironwood tools, and at least one Charm of Keeping if you have found one.
For the first fight in detail, read the Naga guide.
Stage 3: picking your order
through the three branches
After the Lich, the Swamp, Dark Forest and Snowy Forest unlock at the same time. Each is its own two-step chain. The mod does not care which one you finish first, but the rewards stack better in one order.
Branch A
Swamp and Fire Swamp
Find the Labyrinth in the Swamp and beat the Minoshroom for Meef Stroganoff and the Diamond Minotaur Axe. Eat the Stroganoff to unlock the Fire Swamp. The Hydra there drops Fiery Blood for Fiery Ingots.
Labyrinth chests can hold Charms of Keeping. A Maze Map helps a lot here.
Branch A
Dark Forest
The Knight Stronghold is underground in the Dark Forest. Six Knight Phantoms guard it, and its chest holds the Phantom Helmet and Chestplate, which stay with you on death. Next is the Dark Tower in the Dark Forest Center.
Ur-Ghast drops Fiery Tears and Carminite. Goblin Knight armor shards give Knightmetal.
Branch A
Snowy Forest and Glacier
The Alpha Yeti lives in a Yeti Cave in the Snowy Forest. Its fur makes cold-weather armor. Beating it opens the Glacier, where the Snow Queen waits in the Aurora Palace.
The Snow Queen’s chest gives a Tri-Bow or a Seeker Bow
Our suggested route
Most players have the easiest time with A, then B, then C. The Labyrinth’s Charms of Keeping make every later death cheaper. Fiery gear from the Hydra is one of the best tiers in the mod and carries you through the Dark Forest. Knightmetal and Phantom armor then make the cold branch much safer. If you hate mazes, B first also works, since the Phantom armor is kept on death.
Gear details are on the Fiery Blood and fiery gear page and the Charm of Keeping guide.
| Branch done | Main rewards you leave with | Best use next |
|---|---|---|
| Swamp and Fire Swamp | Minotaur Axe, Fiery Blood, Charms of Keeping | Fiery armor and sword for the Dark Forest |
| Dark Forest | Phantom Helmet and Chestplate, Knightmetal, Fiery Tears, Carminite | Kept-on-death armor and tower loot for the cold branch |
| Snowy Forest and Glacier | Alpha Yeti Fur, Tri-Bow or Seeker Bow | Ranged damage for the Highlands |
What each locked biome does to you
Entering a region too early is not instant death, but it gets dangerous fast. Effects keep coming back while you stay. They stop for good once the right boss is dead. Locked structures are also protected, so you cannot dig into them.
| Region | Effect while locked | Unlocked by |
|---|---|---|
| Swamp | Hunger that keeps building | Lich |
| Dark Forest | Darkness (heavy dimming of your view) | Lich |
| Snowy Forest | Freezing cold that slows and hurts you | Lich |
| Fire Swamp | You are set on fire | Minoshroom (eat Meef Stroganoff) |
| Dark Tower (Dark Forest Center) | Tower is protected, so you cannot break in | Knight Phantoms |
| Glacier | Freezing cold | Alpha Yeti |
| Highlands | Acid rain that deals real damage | Hydra, Ur-Ghast and Snow Queen (all three) |
| Thornlands, Final Plateau | Walls of thorns block the way | Lamp of Cinders |
Potions are not a skip. Even if you can survive the effects, the structures in a locked region stay protected. Beating the gate boss is the only way through.
Can You Skip a Boss
or Fight Out of Order?
Inside a branch, no. Across branches, yes. The mod locks progress with advancements. Each boss structure checks whether you have the previous advancement. If not, you cannot break its blocks, and you get a hint instead of an easy way in. Locked biomes also punish you while you stay there.
| What you try | What happens |
|---|---|
| Lich before Naga | The Lich Tower is protected. You need the Naga advancement first. |
| Swamp before the Lich | Hunger drains you while you stay in the biome. |
| Dark Forest before the Lich | Darkness, and the Knight Stronghold stays locked. |
| Fire Swamp without Meef Stroganoff | The heat sets you on fire. |
| Dark Tower before the Knight Phantoms | The tower's carminite devices do not obey you. |
| Glacier without Alpha Yeti Fur | The Glacier's cold works against you until you have the fur. |
| Highlands before all three branches | Acid rain damages you directly. |
| Snow branch before Swamp branch | Works fine. Branch order is free. |
Server owners. On a modded server, an operator can skip a step for a player with the vanilla advancement command, for example granting the Lich progression advancement. Use this to fix a bugged spawner, not as a shortcut, because later structures expect the earlier loot.

How to read the in-
game progression hints
The mod tells you where to go next. Most players just never look.
The Advancements screen
Press L (the default key) and open the Twilight Forest tab. Finished goals are lit. The next step on each path shows as a visible but unfinished icon. Hover over it to read what it asks for.
Locked biome pop-ups
When you walk into a locked area, a toast pop-up appears in the corner. It means “turn back and beat the previous boss.” If you never see these in a modpack, the pack may have turned them off in the config.
Status effects as a warning
Sudden hunger, darkness or cold right after crossing a biome border is the same message. Back out and check the table above.
Boss trophies
Each main boss drops a trophy. Keeping them in a chest at home is an easy record of what you have finished.
Stage 4 and 5: the Lamp of
Cinders route to the Final Plateau
With the Hydra, Ur-Ghast and Snow Queen all dead, the acid rain stops and the Highlands are fully open. This last part of the Twilight Forest guide has no big boss gate. It is about finding one item.
- Find the Troll Caves. They sit under the Highlands. Bring torches, a good pickaxe and plenty of blocks. Trolls and other strong mobs live here.
- Open a Troll Vault. The vaults are hidden in the caves and hold the Lamp of Cinders.
- Take the Lamp to the thorns. Use it on the thorn walls that surround the Thornlands. It burns them away and opens the path.
- Cross the Thornlands to the Final Plateau. The Final Castle stands on top.
Where progression ends today
The Final Castle is the end of the road in current versions. It has no finished official final boss yet. Some players add the fan add-on “Twilight Forest: Finale” for Forge 1.20.1, which adds an endgame boss, but it is still in development and is not part of the main mod. The castle itself is covered in the Final Castle guide.
Boss Fight Tips Most Guides Leave Out
Group fights can scale
The common config has a setting called multiplayerFightAdjuster. It is off by default. When set to add health, each extra player within 32 blocks gives a boss +20 health on Easy, +40 on Normal and +60 on Hard. Another mode adds extra loot instead. Ask your server admin which mode is on before you bring friends.
Carry a Charm of Keeping
Boss rooms are far from your bed. A Charm of Keeping saves your armor and gear if you die mid-fight. Labyrinth chests are a good early source. The Charm of Keeping guide explains each tier.
Each boss spawns once per structure
A boss spawner is used up when the boss appears. To fight again, find another copy of that structure elsewhere in the world. The add-on Twilight Tweaks adds a rematch item for 1.19 and later if you want repeat fights.
Mark the spawner before you fight
Write down the coordinates of each boss room. If you die and the boss despawns or you lose track, you can walk straight back instead of searching the Labyrinth or the Dark Tower again.

Common progression mistakes
- Forgetting to eat the Meef Stroganoff. Killing the Minoshroom is not enough. The Fire Swamp only opens after you eat it.
- Trying to mine into a locked structure. The blocks are protected. Find the door and beat the gate boss first.
- Going to the Highlands after two branches. All three branch bosses must be dead before the acid rain stops.
- Losing the return portal. Note your coordinates on every trip. Each branch is far from where you land.
- Leaving charms at home. A Charm of Keeping only works if it is in your inventory when you die.

Common Questions
Which branch should I do first after the Lich?
Any of the three works. The Swamp branch is a good start because Labyrinth chests can give Charms of Keeping and the Hydra’s Fiery Blood makes strong gear for the Dark Forest and the Glacier.
Do all three branches need to be finished before the Highlands?
Yes. The Hydra, Ur-Ghast and Snow Queen each count toward opening the Highlands. Until all three are dead, acid rain keeps damaging you there.
Does progression reset if I die?
No. Progress is saved through your advancements. Dying sends you back to your Overworld spawn, but every region you unlocked stays unlocked.
Does every player on a server need to beat each boss?
Progression is tracked per player through advancements, so each player has their own unlocks. If a friend was not there for a kill, they may still see the locked effects and need to take part in that fight themselves.
Is there anything after the Final Castle?
Not in the main mod right now. The Final Castle has no finished official final boss. The separate fan add-on Twilight Forest: Finale adds an endgame boss for Forge 1.20.1, but it is still in development.
How many bosses are in the Twilight Forest mod?
There are eight progression bosses: Naga, Lich, Minoshroom, Hydra, Knight Phantoms (six knights fought as one encounter), Ur-Ghast, Alpha Yeti and Snow Queen. The Final Castle has no working boss yet.
Which Twilight Forest boss is the hardest?
Most players find the Hydra, Ur-Ghast or Snow Queen hardest. The Hydra has the most health at 360. The Lich is the first real skill check and stops many new players.
Can I fight Twilight Forest bosses again?
Each boss spawner works once. Find another copy of the structure elsewhere in the world, or use the Twilight Tweaks add-on, which adds a rematch item on 1.19 and later.
Do bosses get stronger with more players?
Only if the server enables the multiplayerFightAdjuster config. With extra health on, each additional nearby player adds 20, 40 or 60 health on Easy, Normal or Hard. It is off by default.
